For access to Fraser Island it is essential to have 4WD with high clearance.
Access points by vehicle barge
From the west via Hervey Bay from River Heads
From the south via Gympie / Rainbow Beach from Inskip Point.
For detailed info on each route see tabs above
Beach travel is limited to within 3 hrs of low tide and daylight hours.
For tides see Tides at Waddy Point
If you don't have a suitable 4WD
Note not all 4WD hire companies will provide insurance north of Indian Head.
(Orchid Beach is 10 kms north of Indian Head).
The following 4Wd hire companies we recommend
From Hervey Bay Aussie Trax and Fraserdingo4wd.
From Rainbow Beach Adventure Centre .
From Noosa Noosa 4WD hire
From Brisbane coastal4wdhire or Britz Brisbane.
Note: If coming via Hervey Bay
Depending on flights, barge times and tides, it may be necessary to spend a night at Hervey Bay. Accommodation in Hervey Bay
Drive to Rainbow Beach in 2wd
If you have a car on your trip you can leave your car at Rainbow Beach and hire 4WD from there. This is more flexible access as the barge takes only 15 mins and operates continuously in daylight hours.
Other stuff you need to know
All visitors need a permit to travel on the island. These can be purchased in person at Rainbow Beach or at the barge at Hervey Bay or at Visitors Permits online.
Note only some mobile providers (Telstra) have full coverage on the island. Public phones are at Eurong, Happy Valley, Cathedrals.
Local shop at Orchid Beach has basic supplies but no fresh fruit or veg. Suggest taking cheap polystyrene box with ice for perishables....it’s only a few hours trip.
Flying to Fraser Fraser 0741 253 600. Scheduled flight at 7.30 am Marochydore to Eurong and returns at between 3-4pm.
4WD hire is available at Eurong (about 1 hr to Orchid beach). Air Fraser hire out 4WD.
Note that despite the costs of 4wd, permit and barge, once your there, there’s nowhere to spend anything else!
Interstate and overseas travellers
We are cautious to accept overseas and interstate bookings until our guests are fully aware of how will they get there....and back.
